Residents of nursing homes are particularly vulnerable to abuse because of their age, afflictions, and potential isolation from those who could hold caregivers responsible for mistreating them. Being partially or wholly dependent upon caregivers leaves residents especially vulnerable because of their inability to protect and defend themselves. Negligent caregiving can have grave consequences, including death.

Nursing homes are expected to provide adequate and appropriate care for their residents. However, it is far too common for elderly or otherwise incapacitated individuals to become victims of abuse or neglect. This can result from negligent employees or the negligent patterns and practices of the facility.
