Foodborne illnesses may be caused by undercooking food, disregarding allergy warnings given by customers, tainted or spoiled food, etc. The symptoms resulting from a foodborne illness may last anywhere from a few hours to several days and may simultaneously affect multiple people who ingest the same contaminated food. These symptoms may be mild or severe and can result in uncomfortable and even painful physical reactions while the body attempts to fight off the illness and restore itself. Food poisoning may also result in additional consequences, such as unexpected medical expenses, time lost form work, pain and suffering, and even death.
